A set of a rarely seen Chinese capucin ground European wheel engraved teacup and saucer, late Kangxi period, ø 6,5 - 10,5 cm A set of a Chinese blue and white Batavia ware teacup and saucer, decorated with a squirrel on a vine, the exterior wheel engraved to the iron-brown ground glaze, with a Kangxi symbol mark and of late Kangxi period, ø 6,5 - 10,5 cm With a label for Robert McPherson Antiques, stock number 25822 Wheel engraving is a technique of cutting deeply to remove the glaze completely, exposing the Chinese white porcelain. This technique is originally a German glass decorating technique that was suited to Chinese porcelain. The exposed white porcelain contrasted well with the iron-brown ground of the Batavia ware.
