Woman with cat Oil on canvas Signed and dated 1934 lower left and on the back. Exceptional art deco straw marquetry frame. Size: 55 cm x 45.5 cm Provenance: Chateau de Champremault, Loire Valley Compatriot and pupil of Foujita, Japanese painter Miçao Kono arrived in Paris in the 20s. Famous for the sensuality of his nudes, he explored both the traditions of Japanese representation and the modernity of Western Art Deco. He became renowned for his portraits of women, his nudes and his bouquets of flowers, which he exhibited from 1929 at the Galerie Georges Bernheim. In 1930, the painter was awarded the Prix Nikwa, Tokyo's equivalent of the Salon d'Automne. He took part in the Salon des Indépendants in 1933, where he made a name for himself with his "porcelain nudes" and a work depicting a Japanese woman in a red suit. His oils are particularly impressive for their lightness, their pastel colors close to Marie Laurencin's palette, and their brilliance. This brilliance, combined with the crackling, was achieved by mixing the paint with egg white, a technique that gives the impression of extreme fragility.
