Paul Van Gysegem (1935- ) Sculpture in Welded Iron Circa 1990-2000 100 x 90 x 30cm Some biographical details: Born in Berlare (near Termonde) on June 6, 1935. Studied at the Kon. Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent and at the Institut National Supérieur des Beaux-Arts in Antwerp. Triple winner of the prov. East Flanders Visual Arts Prize (1959: painting; 1960: sculpture; 1961: graphics). Professor of sculpture at the Ghent Academy. Active as a sculptor, draughtsman, engraver, painter and jazz musician. Member of the Kon. Académie de Belgique, Klasse der Schone Kunsten, 1982. Recent exhibitions in Breda (1981), Oosteeklo (1981, 1983, 1986 and 1988), Lokeren (1983), Berlare (1985), Brussels (1987 and 1989) and Baarle-Hertog-Nassau (1988). Workshop: Verschansingstraat 9, 9910 Mariakerke (Ghent). Paul Van Gysegem is best known to the general public for his monumental sculpture at Ghent's Sint-Pieters station. His work is characterized by an in-depth search for form. They are generally assemblages or spatial sculptures, often made from recycled materials, exploring the space between abstraction and figuration.
