Important Mirror Italy Circa 1880 Wood and gilded Stucco Height : 200 cm ; Width : 120 cm Large wood and gilded stucco mirror. Heart-shaped beveled glass. Rich inlaid decoration of precious woods and mother-of-pearl in the spandrels. Motifs of acanthus leaves, staples, shells and flower baskets, ending with two perched bears holding garlands of flowers. Fixed mirrors, mounted on walls, became increasingly popular in the 16th century, but the mirrors were still small and framed. Often, a flap was folded over the mirror to protect it and provide further scope for ornamentation. In the 17th century, the monopoly on the manufacture of mirrors reverted to Venice, until Colbert created the Manufacture Royale des Glaces around 1666. In 1688, Lucas de Néhout invented the system for casting mirrors, which enabled him to produce larger mirrors. These mirrors, which could cover an entire trumeau, became veritable showpieces in apartments. By reflecting the light coming from the light arms and chandeliers, they help to brighten and dazzle the room in which they are installed.
